The Challenge

The Wayfair Talent Management division contacted us about providing English classes to their foreign born warehouse staff in at the Linden, NJ regional distribution center.  The population in need of English language training came from a number of different ethnic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds occupying a range of different manual labor roles in their warehouse.  They needed them to acquire English at a level that would enable them to communicate effectively with English-speaking supervisors as well as interpret new safety protocols and equipment operating procedures independently without need of a fellow staff member to attempt to translate.

The Strategy

1

Conducted an assessment of the group to determine if all participants' starting levels of English were within complimentary degrees of variance to warrant being in a single leveled class and based on the results, we created to leveled groups; one comprised of true beginners and the other of a high-beginner level.

2

Assigned ESL teacher, constructed a workplace English based curriculum that was relevant to their warehouse vocational work environment, obtained appropriate class materials, and coordinated a weekly schedule around their shifts.

The Outcome

Delivered a very satisfying learning experience for both the students and the ESL teacher, who quite enjoyed working with this population and supporting their palpable performance gains that were noted by their English supervisory staff.

The Challenge

The HR Manager of one of the production facilities in the Portland, OR area contacted us about offering ESL classes to their foreign born workforce of over 100 employees, mostly of Vietnamese origin.  They had allocated a dedicated budget to providing this benefit to their workforce largely motivated by a desire to improve communication with the American leads and supervisors, increase productivity through being able to interpret operation procedures independently, and better comply with English safety protocols in the workspace to as to reduce the incidences of accidents.

The Strategy

1

Came on-site to conduct a multi-day individual assessment of the identified participants for the program.  Worked with the HR team to identify resources needed for the dedicated classroom spaces provided to support an optimal learning experience.  Worked to create several leveled class groups of approximately a dozen participants each based on the assessment results and then worked to create a complex schedule that accommodated all participants' varying shift schedules.

2

Assigned multiple ESL teachers and worked together to craft an customized workplace ESL curriculum that integrated language and vocabulary specific to their work environment.

The Challenge

The HR Manager of Nucor's Houston manufacturing facility contacted us about delivering an English course for their shelving assembly foreign born workers who were working on two separate shifts.  They needed some flexibility because of changing work loads and scheduling needs.  At the same time, they wanted a Spanish course for their American executive team so they could better connect to their Spanish speaking workforce.

The Strategy

1

Our initial assessment indicated that most of the group members with the exception of a few were reasonably close in English ability, which was at a low-beginner level.  We determined that the best possible scheduling option was to place the class in the late afternoon overlapping the transition between the two shifts. The American executive team were all beginners with Spanish which allowed us to form one leveled group to take Spanish classes.

2

We assigned our most experienced ESL teacher and devised a flexible schedule for the class time to accommodate the variances in shift schedules and launched the program with classes meeting twice a week for 1 1/2 hours per class.  We also assigned a highly qualified native Spanish speaking Spanish teacher to work with the management team which started out as on-site in-person classes and then transitioned to virtual.

The Outcome

We delivered an adaptive learning experience for both the foreign workforce participants and the American management team which proved greatly satisfying to both the participants and the teachers who reported the assignment to be among their favorites in their careers.  The participants were sincerely appreciative of the flexibility of the program and how welcoming the learning environment was despite their changing work demands.

NOV (National Oilwell Varco): Workplace ESL Program for Production Workers

Industry

Supplier of Equipment & Components for Oil & Gas Production

Program Type

Workplace ESL

Participant Count

30+ participants

Delivery Method

On-site/In-person

Location

The Challenge

One of the change managers at one of NOV's production facilities contacted us about an innovative idea he had--implementing an English course pilot program for their non-native English speaking manual labor production workers at one of their Houston facilities who were struggling to independently interpret new safety protocols and operating procedures which was diminishing their productivity.  Such an initiative had never been attempted at any of NOV's many facilities for their hourly workforce and this kind of expenditure for this tier the hypothesis was that the projected reduction in injury incidents and improvement in productivity would more than justify the capital investment into the program.

The Strategy

1

Our initial assessment indicated that there were two distinct groups of English proficiency among the population.  We divided the population into two leveled groups.

2

We assigned one of our most experienced teachers who had spent a lot of time working with limited formal education populations in South African townships who was very familiar with adult education teaching approaches, which needed to be integrated into traditional ESL teaching approaches to best serve the special learning needs of this vocational worker population.

The Outcome

The four month pilot program in 2008 was successful.  Both the teacher and the students were highly engaged and made rapid progress toward the linguistic learning objectives that were established.  The experience generated very encouraging results that peaked the interest and curiosity of senior level management team members at NOV that led to inquiries about having this initiative installed at other area NOV facilities.  We ended up conducting English assessments on the production workforce populations at two other facilities and then establishing a workplace ESL program at one of NOV's largest production facilities in Houston.

The larger outcome of that original experience with NOV that started in 2008 was the development of perhaps one of the first formal workplace ESL programs of its kind.  In 2008, workplace ESL programs were virtually nonexistent for hourly production staff. Most corporate language training was reserved for white-collar professionals with university backgrounds. Recognizing this gap, we developed a curriculum grounded in practical communication needs—safety instructions, machine operation terminology, and shift coordination—tailored to workers with diverse educational backgrounds. This marked one of the earliest specialized workplace ESL initiatives targeting frontline operational staff in the U.S. energy sector.  Over the course of the next decade, more and more manufacturing and production facilities were increasingly contacting us about delivering workplace ESL programs to their frontline workers and over the years, we have been able to continually refine our workplace ESL offering.

TEACHER TESTIMONIALS

In a year and a half teaching classes for Chris and watching him teach, I have seen always seen him put the students and their needs first.  Success is just as important to Chris as to his students - it is his main motivation inside and outside the classroom. Many people can speak English.  Few can teach it, but far fewer people I have met approach the teaching of adults with so much professionalism, humanity, and respect.  I also have seen that he treats other teachers or business associates as anyone would want to be treated, and not necessarily how they would expect.  I think this is why his students are so satisfied with him.

Favio Saavedra

Former ESL Teacher

I found Chris to be responsive, competent, and reliable; a person of integrity, someone who always had time for the client, the situation, or me.  He also had my back as a teacher, as I discovered when I had the one client in 9 years of being a teacher I couldn't reach or reason with.  He accepted my frailties without judgment, and valued my strengths.  The clients I got through Premiere were committed to learning and fun and interesting people.  Chris would always get it done, find a solution, and everyone involved would feel happy with the outcome.  I highly recommend Premiere, and anything else he is involved in.  Hire this man, work with this man; you'll be so glad you did.

Zoe Bell

Former ESL Teacher

Working for Premiere English gave me the rare freedom to have my own teaching style, and to use my creativity to develop the methods and resources that I thought best. I was able to focus on having classes that resulted in real improvement and were enjoyable for the students and for myself, and I never felt pressured to "teach to the test".  But probably my favorite thing about the experience was the relationships that I was able to form with my students, who were interesting, intelligent people from all over the world. I highly recommend Premiere English as a job experience.

The Challenge

We were tasked by the internal training and development division with supporting a huge influx of expat managers and engineers to their U.S. based operations after having made a large acquistion of a domestic company in their field. In order to support the transition of the newly acquired company to their operational protocols and corporate culture, hundreds of expats and their families (which included spouses and children) were brought in from their headquarters in Buenos Aires, Argentina as well as from numerous other global facility locations.  They needed to provide ESL classes to all of the expat employees as well as their accompanying family members in multiple sites in the U.S. at both their offices and at their homes to support the family members in a convenient manner.

The Strategy

1

Coordinated communication with incoming expats and their spouses to gather information about the learning goals for themselves and their children, meeting places for classes (either at their office or in the family home), and desired schedules.

2

Assigned and coordinated scheduling for dozens of ESL teachers across multiple locations around Houston and other locations in the US.

The Outcome

Successfully serviced the diverse ESL learning needs of hundreds of expat employees and their family members over the course of over ten years to a consistently high level of satisfaction in helping them rapidly adapt both linguistically and culturally.
